Frequently Asked Questions / FAQ’s

Why should I have our carpets cleaned, they still look ok?

Even dirty carpeting may look “clean”. This is because carpeting is designed by manufacturers to trap, hold and hide dirt, including: soil, sand, germs, bacteria and other noxious substances, dust, dust mites and their faeces, dander and other allergens, etc.. Because carpeting holds dirt, acting as a filter for air we breathe, carpeting must be cleaned even if it does not “look” dirty.

In addition to cleaning for health, carpeting must also be cleaned in order to preserve and maximize its’ lifespan. Dirt that is not removed regularly by an effective carpet cleaning system will sit at the base of carpet fibres and damage and wear them abrasively. Carpeting begins to look unsightly and replacement will sooner have to become a consideration. Keeping carpets properly cleaned will delay the significant capital expenditure required to replace carpeting and will save you money. “The use-life of carpet can be greatly extended with proper care.”

What will it cost to clean our carpets? What is a fair price?

At nulife.com.au we give consideration to:

*Identifying and removing diverse types and levels of soiling and varied procedures (tailored to your individual situation).

*Identifying the fibre types and blends, carpet construction and methods of installation.

*Operating machinery and equipment in the indoor environment, working around and moving any furnishings, fittings, etc. including personal possessions.

*Understanding and accounting for security issues.

*Providing specialty stain removal and spotting treatments.

*Improving drying times.

*The list is endless!

A great cleaning company will evaluate every job to:

*Create superior cleaning results so that your carpet will NOT self-soil for several years, for health, aesthetics and maximum carpet life.

*Perform the work in a time-efficient manner so as not to disrupt your schedule as much as possible.

*Be available after the cleaning for after-care procedures, spotting service calls, etc..

*Preserve your indoor space (no new damage).

*Build lasting client relationships.

Superior cleaning companies charge upwards of $$4.40 to $8.50 per square metre including GST generally for truck-mount steam cleaning, $3.50 to $6.50 per square metre including GST generally for portable steam cleaning equipment, and $4.00 to $7.00 including GST for dry cleaning generally. For encapsulation cleaning the cost can be less and is calculated on many factors which need to be determined, but usually it costs between $3.00 and $5.00 per square metre including GST. Encapsulation is mainly used in commercial areas where if the carpet were to be steam cleaned sludge / mud would be created and dry cleaning is not appropriate due to a high level of soiling. Our rates depend on variables such as frequency of cleaning schedule, amount of square footage, staining and levels of soiling, etc. as well as chemicals to be used appropriately for the carpet fibre type. We charge predominantly at the low end of this range. We are pleased to estimate over the phone or, to provide free no-obligation quotations – contact us to book an appointment for inspection and quotation if desired; otherwise simply enquire and book.

The general cleaning company we use says they can clean our carpets. Their price seems very reasonable. Why should I use you?

Cleaning companies typically perform a wide variety of services from cleaning kitchens and bathrooms, dusting fittings and furnishings, cleaning windows, vacuuming, stripping and polishing floors and other general areas – all valuable services. Some offer carpet cleaning as an add-on for their clients. Considering that a cleaning contract is almost always worth more than a carpet cleaning contract, it is not difficult for some of these companies to offer budget-orientated carpet cleaning service, most often using untrained, uncertified cleaners lacking overall experience and inferior equipment and systems, for a low price. However, a low price never means the best value for the client. Hiring a true professional carpet cleaning company like nulife.com.au with trained, certified, experienced technicians, commercial-grade (extremely expensive) equipment and proven, innovative systems, is always a much better option.

“Homeowners and commercial / facility managers must not wait until carpet looks soiled before beginning a planned program. Significant soil accumulation at the base of the carpet fibres occurs long before it becomes visible. In addition, the greater the soiling, the less likelihood of restoring the original colour, appearance and texture of the carpet, and the greater the adverse effect on environmental quality.” (IICRC S100 – Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Carpet Cleaning).

At nulife.com.au, we have purposely chosen to specialise in fibre cleaning. Some Companies Use Portable Steam Cleaning Equipment. What Is A Portable Steam Cleaning Machine And What Is A Truck-Mount Steam Cleaning Machine?

There are many companies that use portables for carpet cleaning. The ability of a portable to clean deeply is limited. Since the power to run a portable is limited to the electrical power in the building, the machine can only either produce either “hot water at low water flow rates “OR” increased suction / extraction” ability, but never both at the same time. Portables are great for upholstery cleaning. A portable is as different from a truck-mounted (petrol engine driven) high-heat and high-suction steam cleaner as a mere broom is to a vacuum. You should be aware of this fact if you are enquiring about steam cleaning (hot-water extraction) methods of cleaning. You should always ask the prospective carpet cleaning company exactly what type of equipment they will be using to clean on your job.

Do-it-yourself hire machines are portables and can be fraught with problems for the untrained, unskilled, inexperienced person as well as often having unidentified machine malfunctions and blockages (commonly causing over-wetting and long, smelly drying times), chemical problems and other negative issues that can result in permanent damage to the carpet.

Our clients are always proud of their carpet cleaning results and consequently our base of repeat and referral clients has been steadily growing. Let us show you what we can do for you!

How long will my carpet take to dry?

Drying time is dependent upon several variables, assuming the carpet cleaning was performed by a properly trained, certified and experienced technician. These variables include:

*Ventilation.

*Temperature.

*Relative humidity.

*Density and type of fibre.

*Soiling conditions present on the carpet.

*Temperature of the water used.

*Technician procedure.

*Method of cleaning.

IICRC acceptable timeframe for carpet drying is 1 to 24 hours. Our average time is 2 to 6 hours.

Can I walk on the carpet after cleaning before it is dry?

Please keep in mind that while fibres are drying they are more susceptible to matting and newly transferred soils. Covering your carpet with plastic sheets, towels, sheets, etc. inhibits drying. The first 1 to 3 hours of drying time are the most critical. There are ways in which to ‘speed dry” we can implement if necessary. These methods can be discussed at the time of booking and implemented on site.

Do you use sanitizers?

Our objective on every cleaning job is to clean to a healthy state. The use of spray-on sanitizers, deodorisers and antimicrobial agents can be problematic. They are designed only for specific conditions. To truly sanitize one must truly clean. Proper cleaning removes soils and contaminants and is the most effective way to sanitize (i.e. no chemical residues – no biological residues).

Do I need after-treatments? i.e. Carpet & Upholstery Protection / Guard, Deodorising, Sanitizers, etc.?

Using sanitizing agents and deodorising on a standard cleaning job is not recommended generally for a couple reasons:

Often they are chemically incompatible with alkaline-based cleaning agents, causing unwanted “sticky” residues that are very difficult to remove later.

They may add a negative chemical impact to your indoor environment.

The use of carpet & upholstery protection / guard is discretionary. We believe that some situations warrant their use and others may not. We can provide a recommendation based on your specific needs.

What about “dry” cleaning or “quick dry” methods and what is encapsulation?

Dry cleaning of carpet is nothing like dry cleaning of clothes, etc.. Most carpet “dry” cleaning methods are performed with moisture, albeit low moisture. Some of these are widely considered in our industry to be superficial or “appearance only” cleaning methods as water based chemical is sprayed onto the carpet and a cotton pad which goes under a rotating machine and is “buffed” over the carpet wiping the dirt / soil,  spills and stains, contaminants, etc. only, without “washing” them out . Drying time is normally 1 to 2 hours. This method may be costly as chemicals are expensive and it is labour intensive.

Encapsulation is also classed as low moisture cleaning on the other hand but is good when there are large amounts of dirt / soil such as in commercial premises’ carpet. “Dry” cleaning would not remove this adequately. Rather than trying to remove dirt / soils by transferring them onto a bonnet pad, the encapsulation process works the application of chemicals and agitation by a encapsulation machine breaking down the dirt / soil from the carpet fibre and surrounding it (encapsulating) it into crystal particles that are easily removed by ordinary dry vacuuming when the carpet is thoroughly dry. This method like “dry” cleaning doesn’t “wash” the carpet. Only steam cleaning (hot water extraction) “washes” the carpet and truck-mounted equipment is superior to portable equipment to do this.

What is steam cleaning of carpets and why is it the most superior method to clean carpet?

Simply put, the only way practically, to thoroughly clean carpets deep down is the steam cleaning (hot water extraction) process (preferably with a truck-mounted unit for superior results if practical).

Steam cleaning explained simply means a pressurised stream of hot water with the help of detergent solution, actually purges dirt / soils, etc. from the fibre base up. A powerful suction action simultaneously removes moisture and the dirt / soil / grit, etc. in one operation. This “flushing” combined at times with brushing agitation by machinery for superior efficiency of “washing” the carpet ensures thorough deep cleaning, a lifted revitalised pile and a “like-new” appearance. Carpeting in residential and commercial situations can remain cleaner longer also because of steam cleanings’ efficiency. The steam cleaning process when used with special hand tools and appropriate chemicals is also extremely efficient on upholstered fabric furniture.

The most important component of any cleaning job however, is the expertise of the technician doing the work.

At nulife.com.au we believe you will receive the best value for money by having your carpeting (whether it is residential or commercial in situation) cleaned / “washed” using high-heat, high-suction truck-mounted steam cleaning (hot water extraction) by a trained, IICRC Certified and experienced technician. We believe that this is the preferred method for removing residue-type soils / dirt, stains and contaminants e.g. food and drink spills, cooking vapours, smoke, pet accidents and pet hair oils, bodily fluids and oils from bare feet and other organic contaminants, etc. from carpets.

Can your chemicals be harmful?

At nulife.com.au we use environmentally safe, friendly chemicals and use caution at all times.

How often should I have my carpets cleaned?

The Australian Standards for Carpet Cleaning recommend at least yearly cleaning as does Choice Magazine who also state that you should only have your carpets cleaned by a member of a professional carpet cleaning association with a Code of Ethics, like SRCP (Specialist Restoration and Cleaning Professionals) and SCRIA (Specialist Cleaning and Restoration Industry Association) for your protection and satisfaction. nulife.com.au has such full membership. We are also IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) Registered, No. 130478.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Same day service is available in urgent circumstances in most cases (especially water damage for which we provide 24 / 7 service), however, generally we can book an appointment within 2 to 3 days, but planning a week or 2 in advance may provide you with more choices as to day / date and time.

Why should I have a high quality vacuum cleaner used on my carpet?

Your vacuum cleaner is the number 1 key to keeping your carpets clean and minimize soiling and other damage – it is your primary weapon to prolong the life of your valuable asset.
